Seattle Trip

Wednesday, July 17, 2013

Back in January, one of my besties, Kari, moved to Seattle to work for Amazon (you may remember this). I have been so proud of her -- moving totally across the country & doing it on her own. She's so brave! It was fantastic to have the chance to visit this month and not only hang out with her but to do it in an awesome city.

Here are some fun things we did:

--Got pedicures in a kind-of-sketchy nail salon by Kari's (super cute) apartment.

--Walked a million miles all over the city in fabulous weather. Not a cloud in the sky most days! [Mental note for next time: bring comfortable shoes!]

--Stumbled upon a craft fair in the Seattle Center (thanks to a heads up from Kari's sweet friend Katie). I love craft fairs! So many talented entrepreneurs. I want to have a booth at a craft fair someday. Selling what, I'm not sure. Cute things. Letterpress prints & good-smelling candles. Things like that.

--Went to Alki beach & ate fish and chips by the water (until seagulls ran us off).

--Saw a rainbow flag in every store front and a hipster+dog on every corner. I love that it's required for businesses to have three bins: recycling, compost, and trash. I'm telling you, the pacific northwest and I are meant to be together!

--Slept in every day. Amen.

--Went to Pike's Place Market. I know it's touristy, but that turned out to be one of my favorite days. So many great things in one place: beautiful flowers, yummy produce, and fun vendors. I also loved the diversity of people there!

I flew in on a Friday and am flying back to Louisville tomorrow (Wednesday). Kari and I both got a little reprieve from work but didn't have to take a ton of time off. I think it was a much-needed break from reality for both of us.

Total honesty moment: I'm really over living in Kentucky, and this trip made that very clear. Louisville is a great city, don't get me wrong, but I didn't move there in 2007 thinking I'd still be there in 2013. And realistically, we'll still be there in 2016! Wes has at least three more years left of PhD work. I really want to live on the west coast. Maybe someday (please, God)? For now, though, I think I need to work on being content where I am, since I'll be there for a while.

I'm already planning a trip back next summer, but I plan to bring Wes and Lucy with me! I've missed them, and I think they both would enjoy the city so much. We'll all cram into Kari's adorable studio apartment and have a blast together. If Kari will have us, that is. :) Can't wait!
