Here it is in all its... umm... glory?

(Yes, I know, my pictures suck. I wish I was a better photographer. But in this case, maybe the poor picture quality will help enhance my point.)
Yikes. They just scream BEFORE, don't they? I can't wait to blog about the AFTER! (Assuming, that is, I don't completely screw them up.) The pieces are solid and belonged my grandparents, so don't want to get rid of them... but they're in desperate need of some updating. Here's what I'm thinking:
-Creamy white paint
-Ditch the attached mirror (omg I can't tell you how much I HATE that mirror) -- something like this on the wall instead?
-New hardware
-Wallpaper-lined drawers?

My biggest question right now is about using liquid sandpaper instead of actually sanding. Have you tried it? Does it work? I am desperate not to actually sand because a) it's hard! and b) I'm doing the work in our dining room and would love to keep the mess to a minimum.
Oh, and what do you think about painting the headboard gray? You can kind of catch a glimpse of it in this old photo:
I'm really digging gray these days, and I feel like a gray headboard could be fun, especially since the mirror above the bed and the night stand are white. Plus, you know how I feel about this right now. OR should I just play it safe and paint it white to match the furniture? Decisions, decisions....
So I feel the need to mention that I have cute roman shades on the windows now. That mini blind looks really ghetto. (I'm just embracing the fact that the $10 Target "night stand" is ghetto, in case you're wondering.)
And yes, we previously discussed buying furniture, but since moving is a very real possibility in our future, I'd rather not buy until after that happens. For now, I'm hoping that a fresh coat of paint will solve all of my problems. Wish me luck!

I'm not sure about the liquid sandpaper. I've never even heard of it. I do know that they make electric sanders with a little bag to catch most of the dust which could minimize dust and effort. I think you can rent them from like Home Depot or Lowes. You can also buy them for around 30 bucks if you plan on doing more home projects. Check this one out: http://www.homedepot.com/Tools-Hardware-Power-Tools-Sanders-Polishers/h_d1/N-5yc1vZ1xr5Zaqht/R-100599174/h_d2/ProductDisplay?langId=-1&storeId=10051&catalogId=10053
YAAAAAAAAAY!!! I can see the 'afters' already (and featured on YHL, perhaps??)--- I think the gray would be super chic>>> GOOD LUCK! Can't wait to see what you come up with!!! :):)
beth. wow. what a project! i think it will look great. new hardware alone can make a set look completely different. can't wait to see how it turns out!!!

liquid sandpaper is great. also prime it before you paint. one less step and also makes the paint hold longer. its going to look great. new hardware too will make it look tons different. heres a website you might want to look at - she paints everything :) http://asoftplacetoland-kimba.blogspot.com/
if you don't go with the liquid sandpaper or purchase a sander with a catch-bag, just keep your vacuum handy and constantly suck while sanding. this process works great with drills too... no mess!!!!!!
