Christmas Is Fast Approaching....

Sunday, December 14, 2008

Christmas really snuck up on me this year! Suddenly I have 6 days of work left and then we're headed to WV to celebrate our great Savior's birth with our families. (We can't wait!) This week should be pretty quiet, surprisingly (well, if last-minute Christmas shopping makes for a "quiet" week... I can't believe I'm still not done!). So far we only have two nights with things to do. But last week was a whirlwind:

Monday: Nothing (I should've savored this more)
Tuesday: Community Group
Wednesday: Dinner/Play with Beacon (my work)
Thursday: Alicia and Penelope over for dinner
Friday: Over to Daniel and Quincy's for dinner
Saturday: Should've been over to David and Laura's for dinner... but then...

Wes got sick. :(

So I spent most of my day Saturday (and today) catering to my sweet husband, who rarely gets sick. I took him to work at 4:45 a.m. (he insisted on working his shift), to his food handlers' class at 8:30 (those things are miserable even if you're not sick, poor guy), and then he came home and slept for 7 straight hours. I spent my free time Saturday afternoon watching The West Wing (I only have four episodes left to go in the last season... so sad. I love that show!) and writing Christmas cards. Oh, did I mention I wrote Christmas cards for three hours? Yikes. Photo cards next year for sure. :)

Today Wesley was feeling worse and had acquired a fever, so we went to an urgent care clinic. I randomly picked one that was in-network and close to our apartment... and it was horrible. We waited forever and our doctor was clueless. She prescribed him an antibiotic in the amoxicillin family despite our previous warning (and the HUGE bright yellow sticker on his sheet) that he is allergic to amoxicillin. (Malpractice, anyone?) She tested him for strep and the flu... both came back negative. But he's on antibiotics (the only plus side of an otherwise wasted morning), so hopefully he'll feel better soon.

As a side note, I spent several hours today being really annoyed about the doctor visit. In my eyes, it was "a waste of time and money." But the Holy Spirit convicted me about my horrible attitude, and I quickly realized for how much we should be thankful: great health insurance (even though we consider it expensive, it's really not -- and so many people, Americans or otherwise, don't have health insurance at all), medication, bodies that (eventually) can be healed, and the list goes on. It's incredible to me how often I choose to have a negative attitude instead of being thankful.

Overall, I was feeling kinda bummed that I didn't get anything done over the weekend (you know, besides all those Christmas cards), so I spent a few hours tonight preparing some treats for our Community Group party on Wednesday (yay!). Here are some pictures of my efforts:

Inside the cute bags (Hobby Lobby; 50% off!):

The mug may be kind of cheesy, but I do love Hebrews 11:1. Plus, it's filled with puppy chow! And my (coffee-snob) husband says that Starbucks' Christmas blend goes well with chocolate, so hopefully it's a fun gift for everyone to enjoy. :)

Here are a few other ways Christmas has impacted Apartment Hate (H8):

Typically, there's a purple vase on top of that bookshelf, but I bought this classy vase at Hobby Lobby (again, 50% off!). I'm going to buy some silver bulbs (all different kinds) and fill it for a festive holiday look.

Speaking of our living room, have I ever posted an "after" picture since we got our new couch? If not, have a peek:

Complete with our Charlie Brown Christmas tree. It was $7 at Target during the after-Christmas clearance two years ago... and I'm pretty sure we've gotten our two-years' worth out of it. :) I'm going to look for a pre-lit one during this year's after-Christmas clearances!

Well, I'm out. It's been a long weekend. Judah and I are sleeping on the couch tonight... no getting sick for us! At least I have Christmas lights to keep me company....

Merry Christmas!

Merry Christmas to you, too!

But slightly more importantly, PUPPY CHOW. As soon as I saw that, my saliva glands began working overtime AND I almost started to cry out of nostalgia. I don't know if this is out of bounds, but could I have your recipe? It reminds me of your grandma's house, sitting in the basement, playing board games, Nintendo, and honk-shoo.
