Weekend Adventures

Ok... so no one seems interested in buying me any presents. Sad face!

Hmm... let's see... I don't have much interesting news. The highlight of my weekend was cleaning my washing machine. They get really dirty, you know! You can't see it very well in the picture, but my cleaning tool of choice is... a qtip. They can get in the smallest crevices! I highly recommend this for a thrilling weekend activity.

Actually, I'm just kidding. (Well... not about cleaning the washer with a qtip... I really did do that part.) The highlight of my weekend was actually hanging out with Stephanie on Saturday and having her help hang my mirrors in a different spot in the living/dining room:

Aren't they cute? And the daisies are a present from my wonderful husband for our 11-month-iversary. He made the cutest scavenger hunt for me... the subject of another blog for sure! But a HUGE shout-out goes to Stephanie for her help... I couldn't have done it without her (I'm challenged, and Wes hates hanging things). Thank you, friend! :)

Hmm... what else. Oh, I finally decided to invest in something slightly better than rubbermaid as a night table. Here's the before picture:

And after:

(Ignore the stuff on the bed and Mr. Rubbermaid feeling neglected in the corner.)

So... it's not beautiful, but I think it does look a little bit better. It's part of the Organize It series from Target, which I highly recommend. (I linked to a shoe rack which we just bought and love... picture to follow in this post.) For only $13, I think it's a step up from completely ghetto, but I don't have to commit to an actual piece of furniture. That commitment will come when we actually purchase a nice bedroom suite. (Note: this purchase is not high on our priority list!)

No, we didn't get rid of Mr. Rubbermaid. He's just serving his function in the closet now. I like him better this way:

Here's the shoe rack we mentioned -- we already had one, but I purchased a second one. They're made to stack on top of one another. Now I have extra space for shoes... and I think we all know what that means. :) Oh husbaaand...

And to conclude an exciting update, here's what consumed a lot of my time this weekend. Before (or perhaps in-progress... and sorry about the poor picture quality):

And after:

So the paint was supposed to be grey. And... it's definitely blue. Or purple -- depending on the light. :) Wes suggested that it's the curse of our apartment. (When we moved, we sent a paint chip asking for them to paint the living room and office tan/almond. We ended up with lilac walls... no kidding. We've grown to like the color, but it was certainly a surprise!) I don't feel like painting again, so I'll probably just leave it.

The point was to "spice up" the hallway a little bit. I didn't want to paint the entire hallway because it's so small and there's not much light -- I think it would really make it seem small. So instead of hanging the dog picture back up, I might purchase a round mirror to put in its place -- a trick to make the hallway look longer. But then again, I do like the dog picture. :) What do you think?

Also, I'm tempted to take everything off the walls, but I'm scared they will look too blank. I kind of like the pictures on the right (they're from China), but I don't like the mirror on the left. But if I remove the mirror, the pictures will look out of place, yes? And I want to replace the light fixture, but it is an apartment, so I don't want to put too much money into things like that.

Oh, how I need advice. Help?

Oh, Beth. I love your before/after pics. :) I don't think I have enough foresight to take the "before" shots.

Which makes me ponder...

Do you have an eye for what makes a good before/after shot, or do you take "before pictures" of everything?

I imagine it going down like this...

Wes: (eating a burrito)
Beth: Wait! Let me get a shot of this in case you end up with refried beans on your face!

Wes: (doing seminary homework)
Beth: Freeze! Smile for the camera in case your brain explodes while parsing Greek verbs!

I just wonder what is on the Cutting Room floor - those shots that had potential for the before/after gallery, but the "after shot" just never panned out. Does anyone else out there have good ideas for "Beth Crouser Never Published Before/After Pictures"?

PS - In case you can't tell... I'm bored.

Maybe you could get a light fixture that will be transportable to your next place, and just keep and reattach the old one when you leave the apartment?

Beth -
I'm no decorating pro, BUT I think if you just switch the dog picture and the mirror it would work. The mirror would make the hallway look longer, and the dog picture would make the china pictures look like they belonged!?

*shrug*

I <3 you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Beth...love the photos :o)

I would put the mirror at the end of the hall and the dog photo where the mirror used to be. When it comes to lighting, I would keep the fixture that you have and just stick it out. If you just cant stand the lighting in there, find a place (at the end of the hall?) for a very small table to put against the wall with a cute lamp on it..I just dont know how your hall works, so that might not be possible.
I am sure you cant wait to own a place...I dream about that often! ;o)

Just wondering if you check your paint samples in natural light or the light you use in the house, vs. the industrial fluorescent at your average Lowes/Home Depot/Walmart?

Just wondering?

I agree to put the mirror at the end of the hallway...it would help with the lighting...

Say something...
