I usually drink one DC a day. Maybe two, but rarely. Other than that, I don't really consume a lot of liquids, because I have a ridiculously small bladder. I have been thinking a lot lately about the fact that I need to drink more water. (Yes, we've already talked about this.) So recently at the store I decided to buy some Crystal Light. Lots of people love it, and it seems like a great alternative to boring water. Right?
Wrong. I bought it, made it, liked it, and then flipped over the can to read the label. There it was, listed two or three ingredients down: my dear old friend Aspartame.
Now. There is a pretty heated debate going on about Aspartame. Is it really that bad for you? That's the question of the hour. It was approved by the FDA in 1974 and has been the subject of controversy ever since. In 1999, the FDA named Aspartame "one of the most thoroughly tested and studied food additives the [FDA] has ever approved." However, there are lots of people who disagree.
Recently, I've developed an interest in eating more naturally, but I'm definitely not hard core about it. I still have a lot to learn. But one of the most frustrating things to me is how hard it is to figure out the truth when it comes to food. I have several friends who are into the Weston A. Price foundation. I've read much of their material. It's interesting, and its followers are convincing; but is it real?
I think this is making me more sympathetic to those who are really searching for truth of any kind. I believe Christianity is real, and I believe it provides ultimate truth, but I understand why you have so many questions! I understand why you doubt! I understand why you don't know what to believe!
Ok. Sorry. I had a bit of a dramatic moment there.
Back to my good old friend A. I wrote a little ditty:
Aspartame, aspartame,
Are you really bad?
I'm having a hard time understanding,
And it's kind of making me mad.
Aspartame, aspartame,
Why are you in Diet Coke?
Is drinking one DC a day
As bad as having a smoke?
Aspartame, aspartame,
I thought I'd break up with you
By buying Crystal Light instead,
But there you were, still true!
Aspartame, aspartame,
I guess if you kill me in the end,
I'll just go be with Jesus a little sooner
Than my Weston A. Price friends.

So funny! And on WAP, it's not about it being "real" or not, it's in the research. I fully believe that if one evaluates many of WAPs articles and research on foods and traditional food prep and compares them to much of the modern advice and critiques out there, the info stands firm. Everytime I read something critical or newly found of WAP type info and then review their site or new research on their site, the conclusions of WAP are affirmed for me. It's always good to have balance and make informed food choices and that's another reason why j live WAP. They aren't making money or benefitting financially from their work either like many in the food and food research biz. On another note if u have time watch the French documentary online about Monsanto. It's been pulled from YouTube several times but it's a great look at some of these companies I'm talking about : )
your poem is undoubtedly the best i've read in many many moons. i am laughing so hard. while i admit to being addicted to Wyler's Pink Lemonade in the summers...i'm a water girl for the most part. You can always cut lemons and pop them in to your glass for a little extra motivation...or some mint leaves.
hilarious! definitely put a smile on my face. i love the taste of crystal light, but it gives me really bad heartburn. i've just learned that water is the best bet for me...and if i need an afternoon caffeine kick, i'll go with iced tea. but your friend was right...i love the taste of fresh lemon or lime squeezed into my water! it adds just the perfect amount of flavor.
HAHAHAHAHAHAHA
I love your song!
I could write a melody to that if you'd like!
